mama's pizzeria + italian kitchen

when we lived closer to our family, j and i used to host an italian-themed christmas eve dinner, building on his family's tradition of eating italian food for christmas. it's also one of our favorite date night cuisines, so before we're totally over the  "christmas" season [and in the name of tradition!] i thought i'd share our favorite spot for italian food in the mcallen area: mama's pizzeria and italian kitchen

mama's pizzeria strikes the perfect balance of being casual, yet delicious enough to make it a great place for a low key friday or saturday night date. or a girls lunch, or whenever the craving for pasta strikes (basically all day, every day. try it out before you start on all those new year's resolutions!) the restaurant is warmly decorated, very family-friendly, and they even welcome puppies on the patio!

their menu includes all sorts of delicious pizzas (deep dish and thin crust), pastas (breaded ravioli, pasta primavera, spaghetti parmigiana, penne alla vodka, and the list goes on and on), salads, soups and sandwiches. for alcoholic drinks they serve beer and wine and of course, sangria! our favorites entrees are the chicken fettuccine alfredo (me) and margherita pizza (him.) the sauce on the fettuccine is always on point - clearly homemade with a healthy dose of garlic. every visit i struggle to not wolf down the entire (way generous) portion.

entrees range in price from $7 to $15 dollars,  and attire is casual. there is a small parking lot directly behind the restaurant which is usually pretty full, so you may need to dust off those parallel parking skills to park on the street. they are open for lunch and dinner to dine in or carry out monday-saturday from 11am-10pm and on sunday from 12pm-8pm.

[also be sure to check their facebook page regularly, they frequently post lunch specials which are usually served with iced tea and valid until 2pm.]
