mtb is moving!!

Lauren Ellington February 10, 2017

it's true...after 3 years in the rgv, mtb is headed north (way north) to washington state. i already feel the need to make clear the distinction of "state" in reference to washington. as an original east-coaster and someone who has already made the mistake of saying just "washington" during election season - i mean washington as in the pnw. as in west coast best coast [or so i'm told. we'll get to compare in earnest here shortly.]

more specifically, we're headed for bainbridge island and it's surrounding communities. we discovered bainbridge last summer on a trip to seattle while getting to know this heretofore uncharted [to us] section of the country. we had hoped a move was in our future, but admittedly as we boarded the seattle to bainbridge ferry on my birthday, our next move was the furthest thing from my mind.

as the ferry pulled into bainbridge i knew we were in for a rather epic day, although the full extent of which wouldn't hit us until much later. we had the most wonderful time walking around the island, taking in the gorgeous scenery, snapping loads of photos and talking to the friendly locals. we had a lovely lunch at the museum, stopped into a local shop for a quick wine tasting, sampled ice cream at mora, and popped into petit and olson to pick up some birthday gifts and souvenirs, which was EXACTLY up my alley. it was the perfect birthday destination - like someone had taken all of my favorite things and put them on one gorgeous island. j was also suitably impressed by the hiking trails, surrounding nature, access to both mountains and water activities as well as the geographical flair for great food, coffee and craft whiskey. the clarity of what we'd found without truly looking was staggering - a place and people who put emphasis on all of the things we love.

i shot off my usual kidding on the square remark that i'd make whenever we were happily vacationing of "hey, so could you get a job here?" i didn't even have the full sentence out of my mouth before j was laughing at me. but despite our expectations for this effort fall flat, we're pretty big believers in the philosophy of "you never know until you try" so nonetheless he pulled out his phone to investigate open positions.

six months later, here we are saying goodbye to the amazing people and places we've met and experienced here in texas, packing up our belongings, selling off the car i've driven since i was 16, and other 20-something year old pieces of gifted furniture as we prepare for our huge move. it's a lot of change, and sad in many ways, but in order to step forward into this next phase of our lives we are prepared to let go of what's become so comfortable, and are lucky to leaving with such fond memories of our years here.

and in the oh-so immortal words of drake, we've been given the chance to "turn my birthday into a lifestyle."

shaken not stirred 2017

Lauren Ellington February 7, 2017

earlier this month we attended the second annual shaken not stirred fundraiser benefiting the junior league of mcallen, inc. this texas style martini party was held at sofies ss saloon, featuring martinis and nibbles, blackboard and silent auctions, live entertainment, as well as s'mores, dessert and a cigar station.

while only in it's second year, the event sold out and spotlighted martinis from mcallen's culinary scene heavyweights including: santa fe steakhouse, salt/house.wine&bistro, europa cuisine and entertainment, university drafthouse, bodega tavern & kitchen, copper moon bar and grill, infusions, tony roma's, arturo's, and macaroni grill. chefs larry delgado of salt and house.wine&bistro, adam cavazos of bodega tavern & kitchen, and dustin stair, cec all served up heavy hors d'oeuvres in the spirit of gourmet texas bbq.

while the inaugural event last year featured a couple martini stations, it was more heavily focused on the auction. this year, the event has evolved to be as much of a fundraiser for junior league as it is a showcase of what some of the best local restaurants have to offer. we saw an extreme expansion in the number of martini stations, and there wasn't a bad drink shaken all night, with delicious beverages pouring from every single station. i was suitably impressed by macaroni grill and university drafthouse, the latter of which is best known for their beer selection rather than their mixed drinks.

santa fe steakhouse and copper moon boasted some of my favorite samples of the evening but in the end, it was bodega that took home the attendee-voted "best martini" award.

general admission tickets granted entrance into the event, covering unlimited food and beverage. guests mill around the exterior of sofie's sampling martinis and food, as well as stopping by the cigar and dessert stations as desired. all attendees were welcome to peruse and bid on the auction items, which were donated and sponsored by over a hundred local businesses. there were picnic tables to relax on, a dance floor to enjoy the live music, and in addition vip ticket holders were given reserved seating, and favors including a copy of the junior league of mcallen's cookbook and custom hand-decorated kookies by karla.

attendees also had the option to purchase a $20 yeti tumbler, which they could bring to the martini stations for a larger sized sample.

as both an attendee and member of the junior league of mcallen, i am so proud of every facet of how this event turned out. from the support garnered from local businesses to the quality and show put up by the sponsoring restaurants and bars - this event was top notch.

proceeds from the event benefited the junior league of mcallen, a nonprofit organization of women committed to improving the lives of youth in our community through programs targeted at developing childhood literacy and combating pediatric obesity in the rio grande valley.

we'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated, sponsored and/or attended this event - it was a resounding success!

disclaimer: at the time of attendance, author was a member of the junior league of mcallen, inc. since this event, membership has been transferred to the junior league of seattle.
